Deploy OpenFaaS with MicroK8s

As part of the seasonal home lab tidy-up I reinstalled Ubuntu Bionic Beaver (18.04) on my NUC and instead of using kubeadm to deploy Kubernetes I turned to Canonicals MicroK8s Snap and was blown away by the speed and ease with which I could get a basic lab environment up and running.

Docker Swarm on Windows10 with HyperV

This guide describes how to run a Docker Swarm cluster with local registry on Windows 10 using Hyper-V. It fleshes out an extremely cut down set of instructions I’d previously posted in this gist.
Deploying Kubernetes 1.8 on Civo

This guide captures the steps involved in deploying Kubernetes on a single-host running on the Civo cloud. It borrows heavily from @alexellis’ Kubernetes on bare-metal in 10 minutes blog post, extending it slightly with the following:

Download Youtube Videos with Docker
I finally took some time recently to cobble together a set of bash scripts to allow me to download local copies of videos from youtube, heavily piggy backing off the jbergknoff/youtube-dl Docker image and the associated youtube-dl project.

Restarting Docker with Bash
Having frequently found it necessary to restart the Docker Machine on my Macbook after sleeping/changing network, I threw together a small bash script that streamlines the process for me, similar to docker-machine restart
but with the added benefit of restoring any containers that were active at the time of restart.

The future arrives today
My Oculus Rift DK1 finally arrived today, it warranted an emergency day off.
Its nearly Rift time !!
Been waiting patiently for this since last year and its about to ship, can’t wait to get to try it at long last. I’ve already got the schedule planned for what I’ll be checking out - Tuscany, Rift Coaster, and International Space Station Demos followed by some Skyrim and Half Life 2. #futureofentertainment

SimCity 5 a flawed beauty
Despite desperately wanting to dislike SimCity due to EAs handling of its release and the shoehorning in of a completely unreliable always-on DRM, I’m finding myself rather enjoying the game despite hitting some of the current problems on the EA servers head-on.
Carmack on VR in 2011
Time is ticking down on the release of the Oculus Rift Dev Kits, and I’m starting to get excited. Its been a long time coming and I hope that it could really herald the beginning of a new era in gaming. Heres an interesting video with Carmack talking about Rift-like tech way back in 2011.
First dive of the year
A cold morning start and a short dive at the Inner Lees, visibility was dreadful but thankfully the water wasn’t as bad as it could have been, a balmy 8 degrees. DV Diving have a great video with Kate Humble diving the same wreck for BBC’s Autumnwatch.
Gabe Newell on Productivity, Economics, Political Institutions & The Future of Corporations
Fascinating perspectives on running a successful software company which transcend the gaming sector.
